Mrs. Deschler
Mrs. Webb
Mrs. Tessier
Mrs. Krueger
We would like to welcome you and your child to kindergarten at Herndon Magnet School. We know
this is a big step for you and your child. When you leave them with us, please know that we care
about each and everyone of them and realize how important and unique each of them are.
The following is a way for us to share with you how we manage our classrooms. We hope that this
handbook will be helpful to you during the coming year.
CLASS RULES
1. Follow directions.
2. Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself.
3. Raise your hand before talking.
4. No yelling or screaming.
SCHOOL HOURS
7:55 first bell 2:50 go to buses
8:00 tardy bell 3:00 end of school day
In order for your child to have proper supervision, please DO NOT bring your child to school before
7:45. The teachers may not be in their classrooms before that time.
Morning drop off: If you walk your child to the classroom. Please drop them off with a hug at the door.
Afternoon pick up: Parents are strongly encouraged to pick up their child by driving through the
turnaround beside A-wing in the afternoon. If your child normally rides the bus, but will be picked up
at the turnaround, he/she must have written permission from the parent. To avoid any added
confusion, do not pick up your child in the classroom unless your child is checking out.
Check in and check out procedures: If your child is late for school, he/she must check in by a parent
in the office. If you need to check your child out of school, please do so in the office before coming
to your child’s classroom.
Parent passes: If you are coming to school for a conference, lunch with your child, to help in the
classroom, etc., you must stop by the office for your parent pass.
LUNCH
Your child may bring a lunch from home or purchase a school lunch from the cafeteria. If your child
brings a lunch from home, remember that canned drinks are not allowed. Another helpful hint:
carbonated beverages will LEAK if sent in a thermos! There are also several things to remember if
your child would like to purchase a school lunch. The cafeteria will only accept cash or money orders
as a payment for lunch. PERSONAL CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!! You may pay by the day, week
or month. We would prefer that you pay on Mondays, however, lunch money will be accepted at any
time.
Always send lunch money in a sealed and labeled envelope in your child’s folder. Your child’s money
will be turned in to the cafeteria and credited to your child’s lunch account. His/her lunch card will be
scanned as they receive a plate. Any money left over will accumulate on the lunch account. The cost
of lunch will be $1.25. If your child would like to purchase a juice, there is an additional .50 cent
charge.
If your child will eat breakfast at school, please let me know. He/she should eat before coming to the
classroom. The cost is .75 cents.
MONEY
Any money that your child brings to school needs to be sent in a sealed envelope with his/her name,
my name and the purpose on the front. Remind your child not to open it for any reason.
MEDICINE
All medicine must be administered through the office and only with a doctor’s written permission.
Teachers are not allowed to administer medication of any kind. Please let me know if your child takes
any type of daily medication at school.
FOLDERS
Your child will be bringing a folder home everyday. Please ask to see your child’s folder daily and
sign it if necessary. This is my way of communicating with you and your way of communicating with
me. Please check for class notes, personal notes, behavior reports, papers and snack calendars.
Always have your child return the folder the following school day.
HAWK TREATS
Our PTA will be selling Hawk Treats (candy, chips, etc.) on Friday afternoons. Please send Hawk Treat
money in an envelope only on Fridays. Fifty cents or a dollar is plenty. Please do not send more than
a dollar.
HOLIDAY AND SPECIAL PARTIES
We will enjoy many special activities throughout the year. We hope that you will be able to be a part
of as many as possible. All parties will be handled by the head room mother. Since so many parents
are eager to help and we like to keep excessiveness to a minimum, you will not be asked to help with
every party. Thanks in advance for your contributions.
MATS AND BLANKETS
For storage purposes, we ask that you send only a small pillow and beach towel for nap time to use
with your child’s rest mat. Please do not send large blankets or sleeping bags.
EXTRA CLOTHES
Please send an extra uniform for your child to keep at school in case of an accident. The typical
accident in kindergarten is a paint spill or a slide in the mud on the playground. Please send your
child’s clothes in a large ziplock bag with his/her name on the front.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Our PTA collects Box Tops or Education and Campbell’s Soup labels from many of the foods that you
purchase. Please cut out and save these labels sending them to school at the end of every month in
a plastic bag or envelope. Thank you in advance for your help in this worthy project.
Snacks
This year each child will be responsible for bringing his or her own snack everyday. We have found
that children enjoy bringing their own snacks because they bring what they like and there is less
waste. A typical snack would include: a juice box, bottled water, squeeze-it, or similar drink and a
snack such as chips, crackers, cookies, fruit, etc. (NO candy or sodas) Your child’s snack will need to
fit in the snack bag that has been provided. These snack bags will be used throughout the year, so
please launder as necessary. Snack bags should not be sent in your child’s lunch box. We will have
special snacks on Fridays. One student will be chosen to bring snacks or the entire class. This
snack should include snack, juice boxes, and napkins. You will receive a class information calendar
each month. Check this for your child’s special Friday snack day. I will be happy to answer any
questions concerning snacks.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS
• Will be sent home monthly
• Return order and payment to school by date on the back
• Pay by check-make checks payable to SCHOLASTIC (not Herndon)
• Books are delivered to school in 2-3 weeks
I hope that each family will take advantage of this wonderful reading opportunity. All book club books
are geared to your child’s age and grade level (and they’re inexpensive, too!!!). Remember, your
child will learn to read by being read to, by reading with an adult and by reading independently.
