Welcome to the “ World of Discoveries”.  This program is designed to enrich the curriculum for
students who are high achievers.  Children are first nominated by their teachers and screened using a
standardized test to determine eligibility.  During the school year, students will be scheduled into the
Discoveries Resource Room.
The Discoveries Unlimited program at Herndon is an enrichment program for students in grades 2- 5.
This program is designed to challenge students to extend critical and creative thinking skills in order to
explore, expand, and experience the world around them.
The objectives of this program are: students will exhibit fluency, flexibility, and originality in producing
ideas. The students will show an ability to recognize the skills and talents of others by sharing their
products and by reinforcing the efforts of other students.  The students will generate original ideas by
completing a model, plan, or product for each project completed during the school year.
During the school year the students will experience many different instructional techniques.  They will
use brainstorming, hink pinks, play productions, creative writings, and research techniques.   They will
become actual investigators of a real problem or topic by using appropriate methods of inquiry.
The students will complete many projects this year.  They will read books, make sketches, play
Landmark Bingo, and make models of famous landmarks of the world.  They will write stories and
poems about China and France.  They will write essays, plays, and poetry about different topics.
They will use maps and globes to complete a unit in geography called Name that Country.  They will
dress in the costumes of many countries.  Many exciting projects are in store for Discoveries Students
in the coming months.

 Have a Great Year!
