Elementary Library
Elementary students check out books for one week at a time.
1st and 2nd grade students check out one book at a time.
3rd, 4th and 5th grade students check out two books at a time, one Accelerated Reader book
and one “just for fun” book.
New this year – 4th and 5th grade students check out books for two weeks at a time. The
week they don’t check out books we will be doing library skill lessons, mainly using computers
and the Internet.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based program that combines children’s literature with
computer software that tests for comprehension. Each student selects his or her AR book, then
reads it at a comfortable pace. When the student finishes the book they take a multiple-choice
test on the book. The test will have 5, 10 or 20 questions on it. As soon as the student
completes the test the program tells them how many questions were answered correctly.
Internet Access
Most Elementary students have returned their Internet Access Permission forms. Any student
without a signed form on file will not be allowed to use the Internet. Some parents chose not to
allow their students to use the Internet and this is fine. Please be aware that students do not use
the Internet without supervision.
Memorial Books
A book given in memory of a loved one is a
lasting tribute. Memorial books may be given to the
Elementary or Middle School library. A bookplate
with the name of the person being honored, the
person or persons honoring them and the person at
Herndon who is related to them is placed in the front
of the book. To give memorial books please contact
Mrs. Crane or Mrs. Macy.
