Dear Parents, Welcome to Third Grade Math! My name is Beth McCarty, and I will be your child’s math teacher this year. I am looking forward to a wonderful year! We have a very active hands-on class in math. We begin our class time with a journal question. The students will answer the question, explaining how they solved the problem. We then work through our “Math Board” together. During this time, we review skills we have already learned, and are introduced to skills that are new to third grade. Next, we will have our math fact drill for the day. At the beginning of the year we will drill addition and subtraction facts. Later in the year we will drill multiplication and division facts. Copies of our drills are sent home for practice at home. If you ever need copies just let me know. After our drill, we will have our lesson for the day with a wrap-up session at the end of class to review what we have learned. A math book has been sent home. This is the “Home Math Book” and will stay at home until May. This book has been checked out to your child and may be used as a source for you for extra help at home. It will also sometimes be used for homework. It is also a great review source for tests. Signed papers come home on Tuesdays. Please feel free to discuss these papers and correct any errors. Please do not correct with red ink. If your child has scored a D or F on an assignment, I will have corrected that paper with your child before it is sent home. I look forward to working with your child this year! If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know!
