Multicultural Studies
Students today need to develop an awareness of our multicultural world. They need to have a better
understanding of the different groups of people that live in our diverse society. In Multicultural Studies,
students will develop an understanding of the importance of multiculturalism and its connections to their lives.
All students will have the opportunity to investigate different cultures of the world.
After completing this class, students will gain an understanding of the complexity and interrelationships of the
cultures of the world. Students will gain an insight into understanding others as they explore, a variety of
foods, music, religion, dress, values, and customs. They will be exposed to different kinds of writings such as
fiction, and nonfiction. They will be able to read and write poetry. Students will be able to gain an
appreciation and tolerance of the world’s people.
Our class will complete many projects this semester. With each project students will be expected to research
a topic of their choice using an investigative focus and to complete a “hands on” product to show the
research outcome. Students will complete projects on famous inventors, famous women, and famous
landmarks. The students will learn how to make time lines, travel brochures, and models of landmarks. The
students will write messages in hieroglyphics and calligraphy, write poems about famous people, and create
pop-up books about animals. They will study the Chinese, Egyptian, North and South American, and French
cultures. They will sample foods from around the world. They will read books and materials about these
different countries. They will make salt maps of China, soap carving of the Egyptian Scarab beetle and
complete a research project on masks of the world. As you can see the students will have a busy year ahead
