Coordinator’s Corner

                By Betty Swain

On September 17th, all K-3rd grade students took the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of
Basic Early Literacy Skills) test. This screening instrument is designed to identify potential
problems in a child’s acquisition of reading skills.  The data provides a “snapshot” for
assessment-driven instruction.  It enables teachers to intervene with students at risk for
failure before they take their end-of-the year assessments.  The DIBELS test is
administered by an assessment team and is given three times each year, in the fall, winter
and spring.  After the testing is completed, students identified as scoring below
benchmark, or identified at the strategic or intensive level, will be provided with
interventions to give them the help they need to be successful.  These students will receive
small group instruction on the needed skills and then be “progress monitored” every other
week in order to improve the fluency (skill test) area in which they were deficient. The
“progress monitoring” offered is a one-minute practice test of the same area(s) of the
DIBELS test in which these students were shown to be at risk.  Please work with your
child at home by allowing them to read, listen and respond daily to stories.  This will help
your student to remain at, reach, or excel above their grade level   One program that can
help your student excel is The Reading Rockets and ADLit.org Exquisite Prompt
challenge, which is an activity that gives K-12 students a chance each month (October
through June) to flex their writing muscles with writing prompts – and it offers some
fabulous prizes!  For more information please visit,http://www.readingrockets,

Remember that elementary applications for the 2010-2011 school year are being
accepted from October 12, 2009 through January 14, 2010 at each magnet school.
(Magnet schools may accept applications after the deadline in order to complete
enrollment but applications will be stamped late after this date and may not be tested until
the summer.)  A testing date and time will be assigned at the time of application and will
take place at Herndon.  Applications will also be available on-line through the CPSB
website at www.caddo.k12.la.us.
